The Horrific Spectacle with 20,000 battered Ottomans. Count Dracula Refused to Pay Tribute to Muhammad and Frightened The Turks who Invaded Wallachia With his Tactics
In the summer of 1462, Mohammed II, conqueror of Constantinople, invaded Wallachia led by 60,000 select fighters. He was outraged by the brazen attitude of a Vlach vassal of the ruler, Vlad Tsepes, also known as "Paloukoti" or "Dracula".
The latter, not only had stopped paying servitude tax, but was also carrying out raids on Ottoman territory! The "scorched earth"
As soon as the Ottomans invaded his country, Vlad mobilized any man who could use a weapon, over 12 years old.
Even then, however, he failed to muster more than 22,000 men, mostly lightly armed, who would have no hope against the war-torn Ottomans.
He then applied the "scorched earth" tactic. The grain was burned, the herds removed, the fruit trees cut down, the wells and springs poisoned.
Very quickly, the Ottomans came face to face with an invincible enemy. The hunger. The situation became unbearable. To the existing problem were added the sudden night attacks of the Vlachs and the thirst, as Wallachia was going through one of the hottest summers of the last decades.
A Turkish chronicler characteristically states: "The liopiri was so strong that you could cook kebab on the armor". Two weeks of marching into this hell, where death lurked everywhere, were enough to plunge the invaders into morale.
On June 17, the brave Vlach warlord launched a large-scale night attack on the Ottoman camp, which almost killed Muhammad. The arrogant sultan was terrified, but he did not imagine that he had not yet experienced the real terror.
Three kilometers wide and one kilometer wide, a "forest" of 20,000 of his fellow countrymen stretched, a number that is now controlled as excessive. |
The horrific spectacle with the battered Ottomans
Following in the footsteps of his army, he suffered a terrible shock: in a length of three and a kilometer wide, a "forest" of 20,000 battered compatriots stretched, a number that is now controlled as excessive.
The abominable spectacle was completed by the flocks of vultures, which had nested in the lifeless trunks and the savages that tore the legs of those unfortunate people.
The horrific image literally paralyzed the elite Ottoman warriors. Those who had become synonymous with fear for the whole Balkans, now could not move from their fear.
Legend has it that the sultan said "how is it possible to deal with a man capable of such a thing?". Vlad also proved to be an excellent connoisseur of psychological warfare.
Its terrifying "decoration" rendered an entire army incapable of fighting. Muhammad ordered a retreat, which turned into a naughty flight. Everyone was in a hurry to leave the "cursed land"
